Working Conditions Deteriorate for CCSF Librarians

CCSF administrators, particularly those who manage the library, have failed to address faculty staffing problems and other concerns despite a growing number of grievances being filed by AFT on behalf of library faculty. First and foremost is the failure to adequately staff the library, especially the Reference Desk. Staff hours in the library dropped significantly this semester when the Library administration refused to hire available librarians from the part-time pool and to backfill for librarians receiving both Union and Academic Senate release time. The result has been a significant increase in the workload of librarians that could have been avoided if managers had properly planned for and staffed the library this semester. Also, the Library administration is actually requiring that librarians seek permission before coming to their “closed” faculty offices/workplaces outside of their regular schedule. AFT is protesting these violations and seeks immediate redress.
